EVERY SINGLE MOMENT: Part Three

Previously, I wrote about our constant opportunity to worship as followers of Jesus. I talked about how our gathered times on Sundays are only a fraction of the worship that we are called to as Christians. Last time, I wrote about worshipping as a parent. Here is part three…
IN TEMPTATION
Every human sins. We’re born into it. And we get pretty good at it. Right?
More specifically, every Christian struggles with sin. As Pastor Andrew recently said, “Tell me that you’ve hit a point in your faith where you don’t struggle with sin, and I’ll point out your spiritual arrogance.”[1] As followers of Christ, we are called to realize that we are all sinners,[2] but it doesn’t stop there. We are called to fight sin like our soul depends on it.[3]
As long as Christians are being discipled, there will always be conversations about struggling with sin. As a pastor, it’s a common occurrence to sit with friends who are dealing with things they wish they weren’t, because of choices they wish they hadn’t made, for passions that they wish would just go away.
It was in a conversation like this that I was struck with a truth from scripture: every temptation is an opportunity to worship God. Every single time that we want to sin and don’t, we are putting our trust in the promises of our Father.
Our creator is glorified whenever we turn from our sin and run toward him.
Think about that.
If you tend to react in anger when your wife and kids don’t live up to your expectations, every interaction is an opportunity to worship.
If you can’t wait to grab your phone and start typing the moment you hear gossip: every text message is a chance to bring glory to God.
If you want to look at porn every time you open your computer, every time you are alone can turn into a moment of Christ-centered worship.
If you find yourself consumed with the way you look, the way others see you, and struggle not to define yourself in light of that, every glance in the mirror brings the option of giving honor to your Creator.
When we start viewing our sin as stealing glory from the maker of the universe, it stops becoming a self-focused, “woe is me” cycle of bad decisions and shameful regret, and starts becoming a fight that is well worth winning.
As someone who desires things that I don’t want to desire, I pray that my desire to bring glory to God would outweigh and overcome every other desire! Will I fail? Yes. But will I fight? Absolutely.
Christian, you’ve been created to worship your Redeemer. The Apostle Paul gives us a very practical way of doing this:
Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.[4]
Singing a song on a Sunday morning is easy. Putting to death the passions that wage war against your soul…[5] now that’s worship that truly is a living sacrifice.[6]
