Signing Off: Letter to an Exile

This coming Sunday will be our 20th (consecutive) and final Sunday in the book of First Peter. The Letter to an Exile is finally concluding at LifePoint. I have really enjoyed this letter. Here is a summary of the “big ideas” of the series, along with the corresponding passages.

  • First Peter is a letter sent from God to lead us to Jesus. (1:1)
  • Exiles, we’ve been called out of the world to be the church in the world. (1:1-5:14)
  • Exiles in the world; live as children of the King. (1:1-2)
  • At the intersection of faith and hope comes worship. (1:3-5)
  • We love because we live. (1:22-25)
  • God’s answer to why? Is Who. (1:6-12)
  • Your holiness reveals your hope. (1:13-21)
  • God gives us mercy so that we can bring Him glory. (2:1-10)
  • I’m not a Roman, I’m an exile. (2:11-12)
  • Live like a citizen of heaven as a citizen on earth. (2:13-17)
  • Resurrection demands a response. (2:23-25)
  • The path of endurance is travelled with trust. (2:18-25)
  • Jesus redeems marriage by redeeming sinners. (3:1-7)
  • Everything looks different in the light. (3:8-17)
  • Jesus died to bring us to God and he rose to bring God to us. (3:18-22)
  • Elect exiles are to live for the will of God. (4:1-6)
  • God is glorified through Jesus when Jesus is glorified through us. (4:7-11)
  • As you suffer, entrust your life to the Giver of life. (4:12-19)
  • Because Jesus cares for us, we care for others.  (5:1-7)

The final text (5:8-14) will be delivered this Sunday.

I’ve received a number of questions about the next book we’ll tackle here at LifePoint. After much prayer and study, it looks like we may be heading into 1 Thessalonians beginning in September. The summer preaching will be 10 weeks from various texts: fresh, relevant, and challenging each week. Come out this Sunday as we conclude 1 Peter: Letter to an Exile.

One Response to Signing Off: Letter to an Exile

  1. Heather says:

It is sad to think that so much of the world’s population is now exiled; fleeing and on the move. It is even more sad to know that very, very few of those exiles have any of the comfort and encouragement found in 1 Peter. God help them.
