The Legends Continue

I’ve enjoyed researching and preaching our current series called Sub-Urban Legends: Exchanging the Truth for a Lie over the last few weeks.  I think it’s been a valuable series for us, and I’m going to extend it a couple weeks.

If you haven’t listened or watched these messages, you can access them here for video or here for audio.  The major premise of the series is that we have a tendency as human beings, according to Romans 1, to exchange the truth about God for a lie.  We tend to refashion His true image (communicated to us through Scripture) into an image that looks like us.  It is human nature to give in to ideas, no matter how false, that put God is a box that fits conveniently into our pockets.  We prefer a small god, a god we can handle, a god we can control, rather than the God Scripture reveals.  We avoid Him, because He is far too big for us to embrace while continuing to worship ourselves.

It is my contention that there are a variety of “Urban Legends” or “Myths” that float around in our culture and make their way into the hearts and minds of the church.  Some of these Legends are even fueled within churches.

Here is a quick summary of the Legends we’ve covered, and the answers from Scripture:

Legend #1: “The Bible isn’t reliable.”  Answer: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Legend #2: “God sits silent while we suffer.”  Answer: Luke 7:11-23
Legend #3: “I Need More.”  Answer: Luke 12:13-21
Legend #4: “Worry Works.”  Answer: Luke 12:22-34
Legend #5: “All religions are the same.”  Answer: Acts 4:1-12
Legend #6: “If God is Love, Hell will be Empty.”  Answer: 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Here are the main ideas of each of these messages:

#1: If you take the Word seriously, everything changes.
#2: Jesus is God’s final answer to our suffering.
#3: All you have is nothing unless God has all of you.
#4: A walk of faith starts with one step.
#5: If there is ONE true way, every other way is false.
#6: Only Jesus can save you from you sin.

As I said above, my original plan was to make this a six week series, but I’m going to extend it to eight weeks.  Here are the next two Legends:

#7: “God helps those who help themselves.”  Answer: Isaiah 40
#8: “Marriage doesn’t matter.”  Answer: Genesis 2:18-25
